The Rwanda African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE) has started a project to develop crop husbandry in Rubavu district with the intention of shifting farmers from subsistence farming to professional farming not only to farm for survival but also for exportation.
Though the government of Rwanda has been encouraging Rwandan farmers to use fertilizers and crop boosters and also to farm on time, many farmers still farm for their own survival and not thinking about market let alone exportation.
According to Ezekiel Nsengiyumva Buntu the vice mayor for finance and economic development in Rubavu district, the main limitation to professional farming being faced in the district is the attitude of people who prefer traditional farming to modern farming.
“Modern farming would provide farmers with enough food for their consumption and surplus for the market,” explained Buntu.
Claude Ndakaza of SNV Rwanda (Netherlands Development Organization) says that according to the research done on Rwanda, Rubavu district has potential for development due to good and fertile soils it has and markets if only residents can take advantage of that.
AEE will help farmers get good harvest from their farming and to encourage people to form cooperatives for a stable market of their produce.
