{Twenty eight medical practitioners attached to the Rwanda National Police anti-gender violence medical wing, Isange One Stop Centre started a five-day training on prevention and response to gender-based violence and child abuse, yesterday.}
Participants attached to five Isange centres in Rusizi, Kirehe, Gicumbi, Nyaruguru and Gasabo include doctors, nurses, psychologists, laboratory technicians and Social Workers in charge of GBV, family planning and HIV.
The training will include defining the scope of SGBV, medical, psychological, ethical and legal aspects of rape and sexual assault, forensic examination, evidence collection including testimony as witness experts.
It was organized by RNP in partnership with Development and Performance (HDP) and the Ministry of Health.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Wilson Rubanzana, the coordinator for Isange One Stop Centers and Specialized Medical Programmes in Rwanda National Police, while officially launching the course, urged participants to utilize the chance in order to response effectively to challenges of GBV and child abuse.
“The training was designed to equip participants with multidisciplinary environment that ensures holistic care, treatment and timely forensic collection as a way of facilitating justice and also dealing with issues at hand,” Dr. Rubanzana said.
“Participants will acquire skills of managing victims, familiarize them with the general concept of child and GBV and enhance their understanding on the relevant laws regarding child abuse, domestic violence and GBV,” he added.
They will also gain knowledge on the procedure and referral channels, counseling skills, forensic medical assessment and evidence collection.
Isange One Stop Centre started as a pilot project in 2009 to address challenges of gender and domestic violence and child abuse which were relatively high at the time.
It provides free medical, legal and psycho-socio services to GBV and child abuse victims.
