RNP Fire Service show Hope Academy Students how to Fight Fire

{Assistant Inspector Jean Claude Mbabazende and Corporal Gerard Nzirorera of the Rwanda National Police Fire and Rescue Brigade have visited Hope Academy Rwanda Primary Section to talk about fire.}

The officers gave a presentation on what makes fire, the types of fire, how it can be put out and the phases a fire goes through from starting to burn to being put out. Many of the students suggested water to put out electrical fires, but Assistant Inspector Mbabazende was firm: ‘Never use water on electricity.’

The students were also told about what causes fire and how it’s dangerous. To show how fast fire can spread, the students watched a video of the Bradford City football stadium fire in 1985. Within minutes, the entire stadium was on fire, something which shocked the watching students and made them realise how dangerous fire really is.

The students and officers then moved outside to see how fire extinguishers work. After a couple of demonstrations by the officers, two of the school’s teachers and many of the students tried their hand at being firefighters.

The visit ended with a question and answer session in which students were fascinated by the way in which the powder gets inside the fire extinguishers.

The students were transfixed by the demonstration and learned much from the presentation. All at Hope Academy Rwanda thank Assistant Inspector Mbabazende and Corporal Nzirorera for their time and for educating the students about the dangers of fire and how it can be fought.
