Regional Legislators to emulate Rwanda’s example in women empowerment

{As they were officially closing their five day study tour in Rwanda, the women Parliamentarians from the Great Lakes and Sahel Region expressed their satisfaction with the lessons learnt about Rwanda’s efforts to empower women in all spheres and pledged to apply them to their respective countries.}

During their stay in Rwanda, the African Women Legislators from DRC, Congo Brazzaville, Central Africa Republic, Niger, Eritrea, Mali and Madagascar attended learning and experience sharing sessions with Government Ministries and Agencies in Rwanda including the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, The Gender Monitoring Officer, the National Women Council to name few.

These sessions provided the guests with insights on what Rwanda has already achieved in promoting women empowerment and gender equality, which is the third of the eight Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations.

The African Women Legislators saluted the step Rwanda has reached and expressed their commitment to follow the example through a Declaration they made as they winded up the tour. This declaration is composed of the engagement they took which include involving men in the struggle for the emancipation of women and promotion partnership and networking with them; among others.

The African Union also committed to supporting Rwanda in the process of building and sustaining gains of gender equality and the empowerment of women, as well as in the process of peace, security and development of the country in particular and the region in general.
