RDF donate engine powered transport boat to Burera residents

{Rwanda Defence Forces Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Patrick Nyamvumba together with the Northern Province Governor Bosenibamwe Aimé on 7th December 2014 handed over an engine powered transport boat to Kinoni and Gitovu sectors in Burera District to facilitate their movement to and from Birwa Island. The hand over ceremony of the boat took place in Nkenke cell at the shores of Lake Burera lake. }

“After realising the transportation challenges facing your students crossing the lake, our contribution as Rwanda Defence Forces was to order construct of this new engine powered boat for you. We hope that the facility will uplift the studying and living conditions of students and residents of Birwa island”, the RDF CDS told Burera residents after conveying the greetings from the Command-in-Chief of the RDF, H.E Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda.

Gen Nyamvumba added that RDF had provided 50 life jackets for the 50 passenger boat and spare parts of the 15 horse power engine for one year.
Gen Nyamvumba, on behalf of RDF donated ten Frisian cows to residents of Kinoni Sector to improve their socio-economic livelihoods.

Uwimana Esperance, of the Kinoni –Birwa resident told the media that transportation in the lake was a serious threat to their lives, “some expectant mothers could loose lives as well as those of their babies due to lack of adequate and speedy boat”, she said before adding that lack of adequate transportation affected students and teachers’ attendance. “We used to wait for six hours to cross the lake”, she said.

The Governor of Northern Province Bosenibamwe thanked the RDF for the vessel. He urged Burera residents to maintain the donated boat jealously and used it for prosperity of their community. He called upon the residents to maintain their security as underlined by the RDF Chief of Defence Staff.

The engine powered boat will connect Birwa Islands with the Burera District, with ease and secure transport across Lake Burera, thereby enhancing development.
