More than 1000 substandard electrical installation cables have been removed from the market by Rwanda Bureau of Standard in the districts of Kicukiro, Gasabo and Nyarugenge.
Chantal Atukunda in charge of public relations at RBS told IGIHE that this move is part of RBS mandate to protect consumers ensuring quality and safety of imported and locally manufactured products.
In regular market surveillance operations to check the compliancy with standards of the traded products, the Bureau found substandard electrical cables on the market and consequently issued the communiqué on 10/08/2011, to alert importers, traders and end users of the requirements for electrical cables of cross-section area between 1.5mm2 to 6mm2.
Conductors of insulated cables standard, the insulated conductor has to be made of Copper only, said Samuel in charge of engineering standard at Rwanda Bureau of Standards.
Traders in Kicukiro told IGIHE that the seizure the products has inflicted heavy losses on their businesses saying they had purchased them from importers.
Substandard cables seized from the market had conductors made mainly of Aluminium instead of copper as required by RBS.
Atukunda reiterated that Sale or use of such cables is punishable in accordance with article 31, law no. 43/2006 of 05/10/2006.
