Ramaphosa to attend summit in Tanzania

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will go to Tanzania on Tuesday to attend the East African Summit on Burundi, the Presidency said.

Ramaphosa will be representing President Jacob Zuma. “President Jacob Zuma was invited to the East African Community Summit as a special guest taking into account his role previously as mediator in the Burundi peace process.”

Ramaphosa will be assisted by Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Nomaindia Mfeketo, South Africa’s High Commissioner Thami Mseleku and senior government officials during the summit in Dar Es Salaam.

The summit, scheduled for Wednesday, has been convened specifically to deliberate upon the current political and security problems facing the people of Burundi. The Heads of State and Government of Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi were expected to attend, the

Presidency said in a statement.

The summit was preceded by a visit to Burundi by a delegation of regional foreign ministers to assess the current situation of the country and make recommendations to the summit regarding the proposed way forward.

Ramaphosa was expected to return to South Africa on Wednesday.
