MIDIMAR says that 56 hectares of crops were damaged, among them 45 in Gatsibo and eleven in Nyabihu.
Also 48 houses were damaged in Rwamagana District as 31 houses and one road were damaged in Nyabihu District.
Speaking to IGIHE, the Recovery and Rehabilitation Officer at MIDIMAR, Isabelle Mucyowera said that a majority of the deceased died as a result of houses that collapsed on them.
“The landslides hit houses which collapsed on them. One person from Gasabo District is still missing,” she said.
Rains also caused floods in Districts of Nyabihu and Bugesera, blocked roads and interrupted traffic.
Speaking to the Media while attending the burial of the deceased in Jabana Sector of Gasabo District, MIDIMAR Minister, Jeanne d’Arc Debonheur urged people to relocate from high risk zones and seek safe shelters. She said that they will facilitate vulnerable families relocate.
“We are going to cooperate with the Ministry of Local Governance and seek ways to relocate people from zones which put their lives in danger,” she said.
Debonheur said that assessment continues to establish the value of damaged properties.
Statistics from MIDIMAR shows that since January to April 16th this year, disasters killed 51 people and injured 170.
