Prisoners in Kimironko and 1930 await relocation

Prisoners in Gasabo, Kimironko and Nyarugenge (1930), are set to be relocated to a new prison of Mageragere under construction expected to be completed by the end of 2015/2016 financial year.

This was revealed yesterday during the assessment of different activities in the ministries of Internal Security and Ministry of Justice.

According to Emmanuel Toto wa Mugenza ,the Director of planning and cooperation unit at the ministry of internal security, inmates from Nyarugenge and Gasabo prisons will be relocated first.

The first phase of Mageragere prison comprises the construction of the prison, a health center, a kitchen, a store and biogas facilities.

According to the ministry of justice, Mageragere prison meets international standards where inmates will have beds, safe water and play grounds among others.

It is expected that Rwanda Transport Development Authority (RTDA) will partner with Nyarugenge district to rehabilitate the road leading to the new prison before the relocation and WASAC has started distributing water to the prison.

It is expected that the new prison will have the capacity of accommodating 8000 prisoners while the 1930 prison could accommodate 4800 and 3000 in Gasabo penitence establishment.
