During a visit President Paul Kagame carried out in Ngoma district of Eastern province, he has requested citizens to commit to the eradication of poverty by making a good usage of what they own to boost agricultural production, be self reliant in food production and get excess for sale.
He made the call while addressing Rwandans that gathered at the playground of TTC Zaza where he was welcomed.
“Poverty lingers among passive people, when people work poverty is completely eradicated,” said Kagame.
He told residents that combating poverty starts with what one owns and requested them to practice modern crop and animal husbandry.
“We must embrace modern farming, planting selected seeds .We ought not to wait for rain while we have lakes around us. Modern farming will help in the increase of harvest and food sufficiency, and completely eradicate poverty,” said Kagame.
“We have to embrace modern husbandry making livestock our economy. When there are ways of combating poverty, we must try our best to adopt them,” he added.
The mayor of Ngoma district, Nambaje Aphrodis has revealed that 380 000 citizens of the district practice the farming of pineapples, beans, coffee, and rice among others.
The EICV 4 ranked Ngoma among top ten districts having the majority of poor citizens. 15.9% are reported to be below the poverty line. Ngoma district has 12 medium plants processing agricultural harvest from banana and pineapples.
