President Kagame inaugurates Kivu Watt power plant

President Paul Kagame has launched a Kivu Watt power plant in Bwishyura sector, Lake Kivu, Karongi district, Western Province.

It is the only methane water gas extraction plant operating in the World.

Addressing the public at the inauguration, he said: “At the beginning, many people perceived it as an impossible project but it was made possible through collaboration. Right now Kivu Watt produces electricity. Kivu Watt demonstrates our achievements as Rwandans, we try until we succeed,” he said.

President Kagame said the plant will solve the existing problem of electricity and is a foundation for further achievements. The plant will produce 26 MW in the first phase and 75 MW in the second phase. Construction commenced in 2009 by Contour Global.

President Paul Kagame thanked all stakeholders who played a role in the realization of the project which are USA, Belgium, African Development Bank and African Union.
Kivu Watt power plant will contribute to the reduction of production costs the country.
