{Umushikiri} is mainly found in Bugesera District, is a raw material perfume and lotion production.
The plants are transported through porous borders in Nyagatare District and sold to Ugandan businessmen and later exported to Asian countries, especially Malaysia.
Superintendent Emmanuel Karuranga, the Eastern Region Spokesperson warned people involved this crime.
He said the culprits will be heavily punished once they are caught. “Cutting trees without permission from relevant authorities is a crime just like any other crimes and is punishable by the Rwandan laws”.
He called upon citizens to share information with the Police and local authorities about any person suspected to be involved in this crime.
Illegal cutting and trafficking of tree species is punishable by law. Punishments range from six months to three years in jail and or a fine of Rwf200, 000 or Rwf3 million.
