Police rescues newborn from pit latrine

{Rwanda National Police (RNP) and residents in Gatsata Sector, Gasabo District, joined efforts to rescue a newborn baby girl who had been dumped into a pit latrine by the mother. }

On May 2, the baby was first heard crying by residents in the area, who immediately alerted police as they endeavored to recover her before she drowned inside the latrine.

Upon rescue, she was immediately rushed to Kacyiru Police Hospital to receive medical treatment, and by press time, she was reported to be in a healthy condition.

Its 17 year old mother had been working as a house-help to a resident in Gatsata Sector.

Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi, the Police Spokesperson for Central Region, noted that after giving birth prematurely and without any help, the mother allegedly wrapped the baby in clothes, put it in a bag and rushed to throw it into a pit latrine.

“Officers were alerted and they immediately arrived on the scene and worked together with resident to save the child.

This is a classic example of community policing, where residents and police officers come together for a noble cause aimed at promoting security and safety,” he said.

The mother, who was also identified later, was rushed to Kacyiru Police Hospital for treatment, while further investigations continue.

Supt. Mbabazi said the dossier against the mother will be forwarded to prosecution and will be charged after she also recovers.

Teenagers are urged to avoided unwanted and premature pregnancy which are the root causes of infanticide and suicide in some cases.

On top of maintaining law and order, Rwanda National Police engages in activities aimed at promoting social welfare – and regularly reaches out to residents and youth to participate in discussions concerning personal health, hygiene and development.
