Police recovers items stolen from Chinese construction firm

{Police in Karongi District have recovered 19 barrels of petroleum and five bags of cement which were stolen from a Chinese construction company, China Road and Bridge Cooperation.}

The successful recovery of the items came following investigations into last week’s theft at the Chinese firm’s stores in Karongi.

Five people believed to have orchestrated this robbery were also apprehended.

They are currently held at Bwishyura Police Station as investigations continue.

The equipment were also handed back to the company on May 20.

Janvier Nirere, who received the recovered items on behalf of the Chinese firm, commended RNP for its “result oriented and professional investigations.”

“We reported to Police immediately after realizing that we had been robbed from one of our stores. We are grateful that Police did everything they could to save us from this loss, and retuned our valuable items and also arrested those behind the crime,” he said.

The Commander of Bwishyura Police Station, Inspector of Police, Hitimana Kayiranga, noted that after successful investigations, the stolen items were recovered in the houses of the suspects after investigations linked them to this burglary.

“We searched the houses of the suspects and discovered the barrels and cement, as well as 380 liters of illicit alcohol. We suspect they were also involved in drug-related crimes, but investigations are still underway,” IP Hitimana said.

“The stolen items were immediately returned to the legitimate owners while the illicit brew was destroyed.”

“We commend residents in the area who provided information during the investigations – and this successful operation is a clear example of the effectiveness of community policing, which brings together residents and police in overcoming crime.”

He reminded residents in the area to watch against suspicious individuals or gangs and report to Police immediately in order preserve peace, security and the rule of law.
