Police recover Rwf1.4 million stolen from shop

{Police in Gasabo District has recovered money amounting to Rwf1.4 million which was stolen from a shop in Kagugu Cell of Kinyinya sector on February 15. }

The money was recovered from three people later that day, who had posed as clients but robbed the shop as the owner went to the backyard.

The suspects identified as Jean Pierre Nsengiyumva, Sebastien Uwiragiye and Jean Claude Bizimana were also arrested and currently detained at Gisozi Police Station as investigations continue.

The trio was successfully apprehended when the shop owner alerted Police that he had been robbed and provided particulars of people that were in the shop at the time.

“The owner had stepped out of his shop when two of the suspects entered and picked money in his drawer, while the third suspect remained at the door to alert them when the owner returns. When he returned, they pretended to be regular customers, but when he checked the drawer, he found that money was missing,” Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi, Police Spokesperson for the Central region, said.

“The owner stealthily alerted Police which arrived in time. Officers pursued searched the suspects and found them with the money, which was immediately returned to the owner,” he added.

Superintendent Mbabazi, however, faulted some entrepreneurs for not being security sensitive and acting recklessly making it easy to be potential targets.

He urged them to be watchful over their businesses and take precautions.

“When you are faced with circumstances of theft or any illegal activities at your work place, report to Police immediately to facilitate its efficient investigations. It is through partnership and good relationship that a good climate will be enforced for safety and security and for economy actors to thrive.”

Article 300 of the Penal Code states that any person who commits theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a jail term of six months to two years and a fine between two and five times the value of what they stole
