Rwanda National Police has urged over 855 students in Ruhango and Nyabihu districts to be active partners in the fight against crimes within their communities as a way of ensuring that offenses such as drug abuse are effectively prevented.
The message was delivered to the students on February 17 at separate occasions.
In Ruhango, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) Inspector of Police (IP) Angelique Abijuru met with 217 students of Nyamagana secondary school and reminded them the dangers of some common narcotic drugs, such as kanyanga and cannabis, and urged them to refrain from engaging in the consumption of such substances, which according to her would negatively affect the future of the students.
She pointed out, school drop outs, sexual immorality, Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancies as some of the consequences that could happen to a student who have become a drug addict.
“You are here to study and you should invest your whole time in that,” said IP Abijuru who also urged them to shun engaging in drug abuse if they need to become competent and responsible citizens.
In Nyabihu, the DCLO, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP), Marie Rose Uwizera, met with 638 students of Collège Adventiste de Rwankeri and warned them about dangers of drug consumption saying that drugs are not only a threat to the consumers but also to the security of others.

“Any person who consumes drugs are likely to subconsciously commit crimes and can be dangerous,” she said.
Students from both schools were also asked to revive their Anti-Crime Clubs, embrace partnership with security organs and provide timely information related to security.
