Police Officers Awarded For Darfur Mission

A contingent of 58 Rwanda National Police officers were on November 26 decorated with the prestigious African Union-United Nations (AU-UN) medal for their outstanding performance in the Sudan’s region of Darfur.

The decorated contingent joined the United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) on January 9, this year.

The ceremony was held at the UNAMID headquarters in El Fasher.

Ambassador Hassan Gibril, Chief Mediator, who presided over the ceremony, praised Rwanda for her transformation in the last 18 years, against all odds, following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in which over a million Rwandans were killed and all institutions destroyed.

“This shows hope, not only for Rwanda, but also for the East Africa and the continent in general,” Amb. Hassan said.

He lauded Rwanda’s “visionary leadership” which “transformed the country’s social, political, judicial, economic, and environmental and gender areas.”

Amb. Hassan also thanked the medalists for exhibiting exemplary discipline on mission and pledged full support for the officers to accomplish their duties effectively.

The Acting Police Commissioner Brig. Dr. Syed Imam Kaleem commended the Rwandan police peacekeepers for their professionalism.

He urged the medalists to maintain the high standard they have set for themselves and promised continued support and called for teamwork to accomplish the mission duties.

The Rwanda Police Contingent Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, George RUMANZI, spoke about Rwanda’s “resilient and a forward looking country” and the country’s vision of becoming an investment and tourism destination “due to its political stability and economic growth.”

He said that Rwanda is committed to bringing peace in other countries and that it established the Peace Support Training Centre to train international Peacekeepers to accomplish its mission.

The occasion was also graced by the UNAMID Forces Commander, Lt. Gen. Patrick Nyamvumbe, who congratulated the officers for the medals and urged them to continue being exemplary and to raise the country’s flag in their duties.
