Police launch 4th edition of security and hygiene campaign

{The Rwanda National Police and the City of Kigali have launched the fourth edition of the competition among sectors and districts that will run until the end of May 2015, aimed at promoting security and hygiene and sanitation in the city.}

Launched on November 19, this exercise focuses on mobilizing citizens towards accelerating and maintaining security and sanitation in and around Kigali City.

Important points to note during this exercise include; collectively fighting human trafficking, drug abuse among the youth and gender based violence.

It also seeks to tackle challenges like noise pollution, fire outbreaks through installation of fire extinguishers on commercial buildings and other public places, initiating security awareness campaigns, timely information disseminations and sharing, restructuring of Community Policing Committees structures and tightening night patrols.

Also it seeks to rehabilitate sex workers, hawkers, beggars – by facilitating them to join development associations and cooperatives.

In hygiene and sanitation, the competition will focus on proper waste management, maintaining standard hygiene and sanitation in public places, protection and conservation of wetlands and fighting use of plastic bags.

Rwanda National Police and all sectors in the city signed security and hygiene contracts in which the winning sector in each of the three districts, will be awarded a motorcycle while the winning district will be given a vehicle.

Other four best performing sectors in each district will also receive varied awards.

The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, said that Rwandans need to reflect on the positive impact created by previous editions of the campaign.

“Security and hygiene have both improved tremendously – this is a norm that we should be proud of and maintain. We need to keep up our efforts, work together and broaden this campaign,” IGP Gasana said.

Also to be recognized are Journalists and composers of crime prevention cultural promotion poems and songs.

Fidel Ndayisaba, the Mayor of the City of Kigali commended the existing partnership between RNP and the general public through community policing and supporting community development, and added that the cooperation between the force and the city will continue to strive to make Kigali more safer and hygienic.
