Police intercepts more narcotic drugs

{The Rwanda National Police (RNP), seized narcotics and illicit alcohol in operations conducted over the weekend in different places of the country.}

The seized narcotics and illicit brew include 159 packs blue sky of which one pack has 12 pieces, 600 sachets of cannabis and 11 liters of illicit brew commonly known as Kanyanga. They were intercepted in Nyabihu, Burera and Kamonyi districts respectively.

The Western Province Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Théobald Kanamugire, urged residents to abstain from engaging in drug dealing and warned that whoever engages themselves in such dealing will be punished.

Kanamugire outlines consequences of drug dealing and consumption saying that the vice is a major contributor to other crimes like rape and defilement, theft and assault.

“Besides being a security threat, narcotic drugs also negatively affects lives,” said Kanamugire.

According to him, family wrangles are among reasons behind people’s consumption of drugs and illicit brew.

Article 593 of the penal Code stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotics and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine between Rwf500,000 and Rwf5,000,000.

Police is at the helm of fighting drug abuse and the sale of illicit brew. The force is continuously engages in breaking the supply chain of illegal drugs and illicit brew by mapping-out individuals and groups involved in this crime, which has led to the arrest of hundreds of dealers, most of whom have been prosecuted and drugs such as cannabis and illicit brews seized and destroyed.

Awareness programmes in communities, on radios and during special occasions like ‘community policing and Police Week’ have also helped to make the public understand the negative effects of drugs
