{Rwanda National Police football club has progressed to the next phase of CAF Champions League thanks to 4-3 goals on aggregate.}
Police FC grabbed the crucial goal in a 2-1 loss away in South Sudan, which was enough to see them through to the next round based on the fact that they won their first leg 3-1 at home a fortnight ago.
Isaie Songa converted a penalty in the 42nd minutes after a police player was fouled right inside the goal area, to level 1-1 with the hosts, who had secured their lead early in the game through Sebit Ajals.
Despite Atlabara scoring their second goal in the dying minutes of the first half, to make it 2-1 before break, Andre Cassa Mbungo’s Police managed to hold on to their aggregate lead until the final whistle.
Coach Mbungo said that despite progressing to the next round, they faced a challenge of hot weather, which affected his players.
“You could really see that the players were struggling with the weather but they managed to hung on against all odds,” Mbungo said.
Police will face Victoria Club MOKANDA of Congo Brazzavile, which eliminated Akwa United of Nigeria 6-5 on penalty shootouts after the two sides settled to a 1-all draw.
“We are now going to put our focus to our next match which will be played in two week’s time,” he added.
