Police destroys over 3000 liters of illicit brew

The ongoing campaign against manufacture, sell and consumption of illicit brew and banned gin, Rwanda National Police seized and pouring 3040 litres of the illicit products.

The destroyed substances locally known as, Muriture, were seized in a police operation conducted on February 20 and six people were arrested in this illegal business.

Muriture is a mixture of water, sugar, sorghum, Pakmaya yeast and crashed breaks.

The destruction of muriture was attended by 150 residents of Karama cell in Ruhashya sector.

Ruhashya Police station commander, Inspector of Police (IP) Vedaste Uwitije told residents that consumption of such illicit substances has links with other crimes and effects on people’s well being.

“When one indulges in consumption of such substances, they do not get time to work; when they do not work, they cannot take care of the their families and these in turn become the burden of the state and this is not what we wish for our people,” said IP Uwitije

He added that, ““at this moment, every citizen should be understanding the consequences related to drug abuse and be more determined to fight them.. Do not connive or shield those who break the law…always endeavor to work with Police and local authorities to identify those who manufacture and deal in illicit brew. Security should always be everyone’s first priority in all situations in order to protect our lives, our property and safeguard the development of our country.”

He further urged them to maintain the spirit and continue to report those who manufacture illicit brew in their communities.

“Partnership with residents to fight against dangerous substances has been impressive. It has enabled investigations that have led to the arrest of suspects, seizure and destruction of these substances. Let this partnership continue and send signal to criminals that Rwanda will not tolerate illegal and criminal actions,” said IP Uwitije.

Muriture appears in the ministerial order nº20/35 of 09/6/2015 determining unauthorized drinks and other controlled substances classified as narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors.
