These objects that may be abandoned explosives are usually rusty and old, and are mainly found by communities living Hearn former barracks or areas that were used as defensive positions during the liberation struggle of 1994.
In the few cases that they have been found, residents have been quick to report to Police whenever such dangerous explosives have been found.
In the latest incident, on August 03, in Mageragere Sector of Nyarugenge district, a resident, Gabriel Byukusenge, 32, found a rusty grenade in a nearby forest and informed the security authorities that secured it.
Central Region Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Modeste Mbabazi, hailed residents for reporting such suspicious objects and urged them to continue notifying authorities in case they come across such objects.
“In case someone comes across any metallic object that he or she doesn’t know, they should not temper with it, but rather call the police to handle it,” Mbabazi said.
He farther pointed out that children should especially be kept away from such objects since they may be explosives that could blow up and injure or kill someone.
Mbabazi went on to remind the public that no one would be punished for reporting an explosive instead whoever does so is doing the general public a great service of keeping them safe.
