Police football club maintained its search for the national league trophy with a convincing 3-1 win over Espoir on Wednesday.
Skipper Innocent Habyarimana scored a brace while Mohamed Mushimiyimana added a third one to keep chase on the table leaders, AS Kigali.
Habyarimana opened the score in the 10th minute through Danny Uwayisenga’s assist.
Mushimiyimana doubled the lead 9 minutes later with a thunderbolt. The visitors pulled one back in the dying minutes of the first half to make it 2-1 before the break.
At different occasions, police missed a number of chances in both halves including Danny’s golden opportunity in the first half when he failed to score in an empty net.
After several other wasted chances in the second half, Police were awarded a penalty after Rashid Karisa was brought down in the goal-area.
Danny’s spot kick was saved and punched back in play by the keeper only to find Habyarimana who wasted no chance with a rebound to make it 3-1 in the 77th minute.
Police coach, Andre Cassa Mbungo praised the performance and composure of the players throughout the match.
“We proved a point and strength. We were into the match throughout despite an error that gave away a goal, but am happy with the general performance and above all, grabbing maximum points,” said Cassa.
We are in two competitions, the national league and CAF confederation cup. The third competition, Peace Cup is soon coming, so we have many games ahead of us. So this competition is still open and it’s hard to determine now who will win it,” he added.
