Police Arrests More in anti-drugs Campaign

The intercepted illegal liquor includes cartons of African gin and cruel waragi.

The suspects were arrested separately in the last two days as Rwanda National Police continues the campaign against drug abuse, which is rated high among the youth.

The apprehended woman is identified as Esperance Mukandamage 49, who was arrested in Rugarama Cell, Nyamirambo Sector in Nyarugenge District after she was found with 27 kilogrammes of cannabis.

She is currently detained at Nyamirambo Police station.

Others include one Ismail Rudakubana, 36 and Jean Claude Nzabonimpa 28, who were arrested in Gasabo and Rulindo districts respectively.

Drugs abuse related crimes are among the major crimes in Rwanda. According to article 594 of the penal code, any person who unlawfully makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three years to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.

Rwanda National Police has held several campaigns against the crime, which has led to the arrest of hundreds of dealers and drugs seized and destroyed.

The Central Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Albert N. Gakara said, campaigns against drug abuse have yielded positive results.

“If the partnership with the community continue, we will overcome these hindrances and operate in a more secure and peaceful environment,” he said.

He appealed to the public to continue the good cause through community, to deal with cases of drug abuse that still exist, which he said, hinder development.
