Police in Kamonyi District has detained two suspects in connection with the theft of a motorcycle in Karongi District.
Celestin Nkurunziza 30 and Pascal Nsanzimana 31 allegedly stole the motorcycle registration number RA 609A belonging to one Vedaste Twagirimana, on April 23 after breaking into the latter’s house at about 8:00 pm, as the victim was away.
Nkurunziza, who owns a bar in Kigali, hails from Kamonyi while Nsanzimana, who works as a motorcycle operator also in Kigali, hails from Muhanga District.
They were arrested on Tuesday in Bibungo cell in Nyamiyaga sector by area residents after motorists in Muhanga town, who had been informed of their colleague’s ordeal by police, contacted their friends in Nyamiyaga.
Apparently, motorists in Muhanga had seen the suspects passing by with the stolen motorcycle as they headed to Nyamiyaga, when police asked them.
Area residents, who apprehended the duo with the motorcycle, then handed them over to police at Mugina police post, where they are currently detained.
Nkurunziza, who confessed his involvement in the act, said the motorcycle had been to him by a man he identified as Ahishakiye to look for a buyer in Kigali.
According to Nkurunziza, Ahishakiye, who is still on the run, is the one who broke into Twagirimana’s house and stole the motorcycle.
Chief Supt. Hubert Gashagaza, the Southern region spokesperson laud the “brave act” of motorists and the residents of Nyamiyaga to arrest the suspects and recovered the stolen motorcycle.
“That’s the required spirit among all Rwandans, to fight such crimes collectively. That was a brave move that even others should emulate to create a crime-free society,” SP Gashagaza stated.
The suspects will be charged under articles 300 and 301 of the penal code.
Under article 300, any person who commits theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
