Police on Friday, arrested a woman in Gatsata sector, Gasabo district after she was found in possession of 1735 pellets of cannabis.
She was arrested red-handed at about 8:30 am by the community policing team in the area, as she entered her house in Nyakariba Village, Nyamugari Cell with bags containing the illegal drug.
She is currently detained at Gatsata police post.
The Central region police spokesperson, Superintendent Albert N. Gakara confirmed the arrest. He said the suspect had just returned from Rubavu district, where she allegedly bought the drug.
“The Community policing team in the area had information of her illegal business. They have been following her for the past weeks until they arrested her red-handed,” Supt. Gakara said.
He also said that the suspect’s husband, who is said to be an accomplice, escaped. The couple is said to be part of the chain of drug dealers in Kigali city.
“Fight drug related crimes, is among the force’s priority. We want to break the whole chain of dealers, right from the importers to the last person, the consumer,” he said.
Early this week, police also arrested a woman in Nyamirambo Sector in Nyarugenge District after she was found in possession of eight sacks of cannabis.
“With new approaches in place to combat the vice, we have managed to seize big quantities of narcotics and illicit brew, and arrested a big number of dealers,” he added.
“The campaign against drug abuse is still on. The public, through community policing, have been vital in the whole campaign, and we believe even those that are still involved in this fraudulent business, will be arrested…it’s a matter of time,” he added.
According to article 594 of the new penal code, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.
