Police arrest two in murder of Transparency International staff

{The Rwanda National Police has arrested two people in connection with the murder of Gustave Makonene, the former employee of Transparency International-Rwanda, who was killed in July last year.}

Makonene, the former coordinator of TI-Rwanda in Rubavu District, Western Province, was found dead on the shores of Lake Kivu in Nyamyumba sector on July 18, last year.

The suspects are identified as Nelson Iyakaremye and Isaac Ndabarinze.

Ndabarinze was arrested in Kigali last Saturday following thorough investigation while Iyakaremye was already serving his sentence in Remera prison on other charges.

For over a year now, the Criminal Investigation Department has been conducting thorough investigations into the murder of Makonene which led to the arrest of Ndabarinze and Iyakaremye, both corporals in RNP, a situation the force regrets.

The Criminal Investigation Department believes, based on thorough investigations and credible evidence, has got real suspects.

Investigations indicate that the two suspects killed Makonene to prevent him from disclosing their illegal businesses that included taking bribes and aiding some people from the Democratic Republic of Congo to smuggle minerals into Rwanda.

The CID has already completed its investigations and the file is ready to be handed to prosecution.

If found guilty, the suspects will face a life sentence under article 140 of the penal code.

Rwanda National Police also warned against graft tendencies and other misconducts, adding that this is an act the force takes seriously in partnership with various stakeholders like Ombudsman Office and Transparency International, to deter such malpractices and bring to justice anyone involved.
