Police Arrest Man Over Counterfeit Currency

Police in Nyarugenge district is holding a man after he was allegedly found in possession of counterfeit money.

Twagirumukiza Laurent, 21 of Nyamilambo sector in Mumena cell was arrested after he was found with fake money amounting to Rwf 38, 000 , all in 2000 denominations.

It all started when Twagirumukiza paid a motorcycle operator a note of Rwf 2000, the latter only to realise that the note was fake.

This developed into an argument between the two, but the suspect, who had convinced the motorcycle that he could have got the fake note from another person, decided to look for a change at a nearby petrol station to pay him.

His luck run-out when he again used the fake note at the petrol station to get change.

An employee at the fake station also realised that the note was fake. This prompted people who were there to search him only to find other fake notes amounting to Rwf38, 000.

He is currently held at Nyamilambo Police Station.

Investigations are also still going on to see if there are other people working with Twagirumukiza, to counterfeit money the District Police Commander, Superintendent Dismas Rutaganira said.

He warned the public that involving themselves in such counterfeit activities “won’t take long before they are apprehended because the community now know real money and what’s fake.”

“Citizens should not engage in criminal activities but look for other means of making a living in a more secure and appropriate way.” employees to always verify thoroughly these notes before any transaction,” said Rutaganira.

“I am urging the public to beware and report immediately any suspected incidents related to counterfeit or even any other crimes such that these criminals can
be arrested,” he added.

The District Police Commander warned the public that those who still engage in money counterfeiting or other related cases are arrested and put to book.
