Gilbert Mwumvaneza, 32, was arrested on December 17 in Virunga National Park where at the time; he had already killed an antelope.
Police is also narrowing down the search for eight others who are said to be part of Mwumvaneza’s associates.
Other suspects identified as Frodouald Senderi 60 and Jean Hitimana 58, were arrested in Kayonza District for killing a kob in Akagera national park.
The duo, currently held at Rukara Police Station, was found with the Kob meat at the time of their arrest.
Poaching is a crime punishable under article 417 of the penal code which states that “Any person who poaches, sells, injures or kills a gorilla or any other protected endangered animal species shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than five years to ten years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 Rwf5 million.
