Persistent water shortages irk Musanze residents

{Residents of Musanze district have continued to express frustrations over persistent water shortages from both constructed and natural sources.}

The residents mostly affected are from Kiryi village, Kigombe cell of Muhoza sector in Musanze district. Wells have been dug in their village but no water has collected yet.

Talking to IGIHE, residents said that they have been experiencing water shortage for two years and now fetch it from Mpenge River which is not so clean, leaving them susceptible to diseases.

“It’s been two years without getting water in wells. We are supposed to pay Rwf 100 per jerry can to get Mpenge unsafe water,” said Nshimiyimana Marc, a resident.

Despite citizens’ complaints, Adeline Uwamariya, the director of Mutobo water treatment which processes water from Rubindi and Mutobo rivers, said that they distribute between 6,500 and 12,000 of 24,000 cubic meters of water per day.

The director of WASAC in Musanze, Murigo J. Claude said that water shortage results from water canals destroyed while renovating roads adding that there are old water canals unable to carry the generated quantities of water.

He pointed out the water reservoir in Nyamagumba which distributes water in Musanze district which distributes 600 cubic meters and has existed for over 60 years.

Mutobo water treatment plant processes 24,000 cubic meters per day but there are no enough reservoirs to keep the treated water.
