For the first time the Peace Corp Global Director from Washington, D.C. Carrie Hessler-Radelet, will be in Rwanda to attend the swearing-in ceremony for 27 new volunteers who will be in Rwanda for two years working in the community health sector around the country, as well as 10 rapid response volunteers who will teach English in secondary schools.

This website has learnt that the Swearing-in Ceremony will take place August 18, 2015.

Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, nearly 220,000 Americans of all ages have served in 140 countries worldwide.

The Peace Corps in Rwanda was opened in 1975, when three Volunteers arrived to work in University Education. Between 1975 and 1993, 132 Volunteers served in Rwanda working in the sectors of university education, fisheries, agriculture, conservation and health.

On the invitation of President Paul Kagame and the Rwandan Government, the Peace Corps returned to Rwanda in 2009, opening the current Community Health and TEFL and Teacher Support projects.

Volunteers are assigned to schools and community health centers in small villages and work directly with their Rwandan partners and community members.
