Over Rwf 590 million raised for genocide survivors

The government of Rwanda plan to collect items and fundraise for vulnerable survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi has brought in good dividends, raising hundreds of millions to the cause.

The executive Secretary of the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide (CNLG) Dr Jean Damascène Bizimana, told IGIHE that a total of Rwf 594, 582, 911 has been raised during the 100 days of commemorating 1994 genocide against Tutsi for the 22nd time.

Gicumbi district emerged top contributor having raised Rwf68, 417,638, followed by Nyagatare with Rwf 44,936, 486 and Nyabihu with Rwf 42,297,940.

CNLG is collaborating with the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC), the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MINECOFIN) and districts in seeking a way of efficiently delivering the contributions to beneficiaries.The matter of recently identified challenge of mismanagement of the fund shall as well be addressed.

Dr Bizimana said that they are seeking to establish a commission at district level comprised of IBUKA members and CNLG which will identify beneficiaries, type of support and making follow up.

“In the past people would use the fund as they wished. Some people would use it to hire tents for use during commemoration talks yet the money is meant to support genocide survivors,” he said.
