Over 7000 residents in crime prevention awareness

Over 7000 residents, on May 18 turned up for Rwanda National Police (RNP) crime prevention awareness held separately in the districts of Musanze, Kicukiro and Nyaruguru.

The campaigns underway in different parts of the country seek to raise the awareness against specific crimes and strengthen the concept of community policing as part of the drive to ensure crime prevention.

In Musanze, the mayor Jean Claude Musabyimana said; “Your prosperity and the development of your communities depend on how safe you are. Remember, you cannot be safe when you are covering up criminals or when you think it’s not your responsibility to report a crime.”

“We should collectively collaborate with Rwanda National Police in anti-crime awareness and prevention; we can do this by being part of different initiatives that are aligned with crime prevention like neighborhood watch and providing timely information,” he added.

The District Police Commander (DPC) of Musanze, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Benoit Nsengiyumva urged residents to ensure they are the eyes and ears of their communities by reporting wrongdoers.

In Nyaruguru, the DPC, Supt. Janvier Ntakirutimana also echoed similar message and emphasized the need for effective information sharing.

“You should always keep in mind that security is the pillar for development, without it we can’t make any progress that’s why we need to ensure we preserve it at all times and that’s how the ideal of community policing was born to empower you to ensure that security is maintained in your neighbourhoods,” Supt. Ntakirutimana said.

Police in partnership with local authorities were disseminating the messages calling for action to all residents, to desist from any illegal acts and report anything suspicion and deter crime.
