Over 70,000 teachers attend Itorero

{A total of 73,288 teachers from private and public nursery up to secondary schools and Vocational training schools have started a civic education (Itorero) dubbed ‘Indemyabigwi’ to get them acquainted with morals of Rwandan culture to properly train pupils that fully understand Rwanda’s values. }

The civic education is being held in all districts where teachers have come together at 134 sites to be trained until 12th January 2017.

The Ministry of Education has observed that the civic education is a good opportunity for self evaluation that will see teachers review their performance since 2008 when they participated in civic education sessions and develop new strategies to proper training of the children.

The MINEDUC permanent secretary, Dr Ntivuguruzwa Celestin has said that teachers being the frontline soldiers in imparting discipline, their total appreciation of the same must be accentuated. “We are thinking about achieving the targets entailed in vision 2050 as set by Rwandans under the stewardship President Paul Kagame. We have decided to organize a civic education for all teachers so they can be trained on the guidelines to upholding moral values because what they teach would be useless in the absence of moral values,” he said.

“We want a teacher to understand our chosen vision, be trained on taboos and moral values of Rwandan culture so he/she can in return offer the education to Rwanda’s children, the future leaders. We want teachers to receive enough explanations on the country’s vision and his/her role to reach it,” he added.

Such a civic education is being held for the second time. It was organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Rwanda National Police and the National Itorero Commission.

The theme in this year’s civic education is ‘The role of an educator in building the Rwanda we want.’
