{Residents living nearby Rugaza marshland located between Kabarondo and Murama in Kayonza district have requested concerned parties to compel the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) to compensate them for their land taken over by the Rural Sector Support Program (RSSP) for rehabilitation. They say they have awaited for compensation for four years.
}
Residents say were promised to get the compensation of their land when RSSP started rehabilitating 180 hectares of marshlands in Rugazi marshland in 2012.
One of the residents, a 63-year old woman, told IGIHE that some only got partial payments.
“They have registered us and promised the compensation. It was realized that some of were partially paid but I have got nothing and I am wondering what will happen since it’s taking too long,” she said.
RSSP agrees that there have been delays in compensating but are seeking how to solve the matter not later than February 2016 as confirmed by Benjamin Murigande, the RSSP officer in charge of addressing such complaints.
“There were some statistical errors which jeopardized implementation of complaints. We have received the complaints from the residents and their compensation will be due in two or three weeks,” he said.
