{Over 4400 youth who graduated from high school last year, have joined Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP), a forum composed mainly the young generation, to further boost efforts in raising awareness against crimes and promote community safety.
}
Of those that joined, include 1965 from Huye District, 1091 in Nyamagabe, 650 in Kirehe, 367 in Ruhango and 324 in Rutsiro.
The new members of the youth forum joined at the time they were undergoing a civic education programme – Itorero – held at different sites across the country.
It was also after Rwanda National Police (RNP) and representatives of RYVCP sensitised them on the role of youth in fighting crimes like Gender Based Violence and drug abuse.
In Kirehe, the District Police Commander (DPC) Supt. James Rutaremara, while speaking to the students at Rusumo High School, urged them to always play their role as agents of change and deliver according to the expectations by avoiding and fighting crime.
“Be exemplary in your communities. You should be bold and come out to denounce injustices such as gender based violence, drug abuse, human trafficking and more – and also alert Police about suspicious elements in your neighborhoods,” Supt. Rutaremara said.
“Use this forum to discuss positive initiatives on how to overcome challenges in your communities and also look out for your fellow youth and sensitize them about Rwandan laws.”
SP Rutaremara further noted that the youth are the majority vulnerable group in abusing drugs and becoming addicts.
“We need to reverse this trend and perception together; when you report any person trafficking or selling illicit substances, you will have played your part in promoting community safety and security, and preventing fellow youth from falling victims,” he said.
The Coordinator of RYVCP in Kirehe, Faustin Ngarukiyinka, thank the new members and noted that the decision they took will benefit the entire nation in safety and development.
He commended RNP for its close partnership with the youth, adding that through RYVCP, Rwanda will always strives to ensure that the young generations are patriotic citizens and influential in maintaining safety.
“Rwanda is developing fast, meaning that we the youth must be part of that development. We should shun anything that tries to divert us, concentrate on education. Let us continue to partner with Police in every beneficial way,” he said.
In several other districts where new members joined the crime prevention cause, the District Community Liaison Officers along with coordinators of RYVCP tutored them on their role in community policing
