{A total of 104 Rwandan refugees that had fled the country in 1994 have today repatriated from various regions of Southern Kivu including Walikale, Karehe and Masisi in the Republic Democratic of Congo (DRC). They have arrived in Rwanda at Rusizi border post.}
They have revealed how they were mistreated as refugees and used to hear falsified information that Rwanda is insecure which hindered their repatriation.
“The Congolese and FDLR could always say; ‘Rwandans are wicked,’ yet we cultivated their land without getting paid. They would also tell us that there is no security in Rwanda. This is how we lived as in refugees for this long ,” said one repatriate Mukeshimana Iradukunda.
Repatriated Rwandans revealed how delightful they are for being warmly welcomed and requested their neighbors remaining in DRC forests to reject false rumors about Rwanda and return to their native country which is now safe.
Arriving in Nyagatare provisional camp today, repatriated refugees received basic home materials including casseroles, blankets, foods and medical insurance.
The 104 include 66 children born in forests, 30 women and 8 men. They will be integrated into their families after one day.
