Old passenger vehicles face ban

Stakeholders in the public passengers and transport sector are considering reforms with banishing old vehicles likely to be effected.

Passengers have been raising complaints over old cars that sluggishly take them to their respective destinations besides the constant fumes that are dangerous to inhale.
The minister of state for transport in the Ministry of Infrastructure Dr Alexis Nzahabwanimana said that the issue of old cars, right from the importation stage is being addressed.

He revealed this during a consultative meeting held between MININFRA and transport agencies in Rwanda held mid this week.

“I don’t think the matter is worrying since the government has put in place good measures to ban old cars importation. We are bringing new cars and repairing old ones,” he said.

Big buses which can carry 60 passengers have been increased to 96, while those with a carrying capacity between 32 and 60 passengers have increased to 40. Coasters having between 25 and 32 passenger capacity have increased from 246 to 411. Small taxis are also reducing where 575 taxis were reduced to 133.
