Official defends analysis of ways to end conflicts in some ICGLR countries

Luanda The Chief of Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), general Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, last Monday in Luanda defended the need for an analysis that enables the implementation of decisions taken by the parties in conflict, in some countries of the Great Lakes region, with a view to installing a climate of peace and trust.

The top military chief made this statement when delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the meeting of Military Chiefs of Staffs and Heads of Information Services of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), which was looking at the current situation in this African region, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Central African Republic (CAR), South Sudan and Burundi.

As regards DRC, the top military chief said that significant steps have been taken in regard to the creation of conditions to disarm, demobilisation, repatriation and social reintegration of the negative forces rebels, as well as their relatives.

“We think that a significant step has been taken in this sense, and in face of the reluctance shown by the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), (…) the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) initiated an offensive with a view to making those forces surrender”, said the source.

The general-officer stressed that the military chiefs of the ICGLR recognise that this is not an easy task considering the vast theatre of operations and the method of action used by the rebel forces, adding, however, that this is a mission that when accomplished will guarantee stability and development for that region of the Congolese territory.

“Now we are waiting not just for the results, but also the general condition in the eastern part of the country”, he explained.

This meeting of Military Chiefs of Staffs and Heads of Information Services of the ICGLR precedes the extraordinary meeting of the Defence Ministers Committee of this organization, set to happen this Tuesday in Luanda.

The Angolan Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, started in January 2014 his two-year mandate as chairman of the ICGLR.

The ICGLR comprises Burundi, Central African Republic, DRC, Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudanl, Tanzania and Zambia.
