Observe standards: Processors told

{Engagement in making products without knowledge of required standards to assure quality is among the causes of inadequacy of qualified for local and international products; the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) has revealed. }

Murenzi Raymond, National Standards Division Manager argues that some common standards have been made compulsory to avoid unqualified products on the market that present dire health consequences.

“There are standards on foods processing and packing, perfumes and construction; among others which must be respected to ensure safety and security of users,” he cautioned during a sensitization workshop held at Hiltop Hotel, Kigali.

Producers and processors have therefore been advised to train on standards, to get a clear understanding of what should be done and observed to avoid ban on their activities over the lack of standards.

“There should be trainings to create awareness among small and medium industries on their activities as well as safety and security issues,” advised Mukeshimana Claudine, the president of Rwandan Industries Cooperatives.

RSB revealed a plan to set a new institution to regulate and elaborate new instructions on standards and propose penalties for any violation.

Even though there are no specific codes and penalties reserved for industries that violate standards, RSB will use the penal code as they await establishment of a fully fledged standards penal code to bring to book the violators.
