Obama to send envoy to Sudan on talks to lift sanctions

{US special envoy to Sudan Donald Booth arrives in Khartoum Tuesday for a 3-day visit.}

The Sudanese ministry of foreign affairs said in statement on Monday that the issue of lifting American economic sanctions and removing Sudan from the US list of countries accused of sponsoring terrorism will top the agenda of his meetings with Sudanese officials.

Mr Booth will be meeting the Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Gandour on Tuesday.

“The talks will focus on bilateral relations between the Sudan and the United States of America, with special emphasis on the economic and trade areas,” said ministry statement.

“The two sides will also exchange views on lifting the name of the Sudan from the list of countries the US considers sponsor international terrorism, and also lifting unilateral sanctions imposed on the Sudan,” it said.

The government said that the two sides will exchange views on the situation in South Sudan and the role Sudan could play in ending the conflict there.

War zones

Meanwhile the chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Sudanese legislative assembly, Mohammed Alhassan Alamin, told Africa Review that officials from the US Treasury and the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) will be among the American delegation, suggesting the sanctions issue will definitely be discussed.

The envoy will meet opposition leaders and representatives of human rights organisations, according to a civil society leader. He will also visit the troubled region of Darfur.

The civil society campaigner added that Mr Booth will discuss with his hosts ways to push the national dialogue forward and the ceasefire in the war zones of South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

Sudan has been on the American list of countries supposedly sponsoring terrorism since 1993.

Washington also imposed unilateral economic sanctions on the the country in 1997.
