Nyaruguru survivors want Ntaganzwa to be tried home

Residents of Cyahinda sector, Nyaruguru district have requested for a genocidaire, a one Ladislas Ntaganzwa, to be tried from that area, for his fierce participation in fuelling killings during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

The residents made the over the weekend during the 22nd commemoration of the 1994 genocide. During the commemoration, 31 bodies of genocide victims collected from various parts of Nyaruguru were accorded decent burial.

Survivors wished for Ntaganzwa to be tried at home and experience how they survived and live better with neighbors.

“Immediately after hearing that he was arrested and brought in Rwanda, we felt happy. However, it would be better if he is brought here to see what he destroyed and see how resilient we are becoming as survivors he wanted to exterminate. If he comes, he can also see how well we are getting on with neighbors and how we have united with the people he trained to kill,” said an old man, Vital Munyentwali.

Bernard Kabahooza says; “I know Ntaganzwa even though I was a little kid during the 1994 genocide against Tutsi. Our hearts would be free if we see the man who wanted to exterminate us being tried at home. This would demonstrate a lesson to all Rwandans to avoid similar cruelty,” he said.

The governor of Southern province, Alphonse Munyantwali who joined Cyahinda residents during the commemoration asked residents to accept trial of Ntaganda did regardless of where he will be tried.

“As we closed commemoration week, Nyagisozi sector residents requested to bring Ntaganzwa to be tried home. It may be accepted or not. However, I request whoever has testimonies to try his best to go to Kigali to give witness,” he said.

Ladislas Ntaganzwa was the former mayor of Nyakizu district .He is accused of having led a gang that killed Tutsi in the district with others that fled in Nyakizu.His crimes include raping women.

Ntaganzwa was arrested on December 7th, 2015 in Nyanzale in Democratic Republic of Congo. He was brought in Rwanda on March 20th, 2016.
