Nyaruguru malnutrition fight in Rwf25 million boost

{Farmers from Busanze and Ruheru in Nyaruhuru district have committed to keeping their children safe from malnutrition following tips and training from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in modern farming practices that, as well, donated modern agricultural equipments to support production expansion. }

Farmers were trained in modern farming and growing of maracuja, mushrooms, bamboos and apiculture (bee keeping, honey harvesting and processing).

Twenty two cooperatives of bee-keepers were given modern hives; 30 mushroom growing cooperatives were bought for a piece of land to run their activities and given seeds and 10 plum cooperatives and 5 cooperatives of bamboo received seeds all of which amounted to Rwf 25 million.

Serubibi Soter, FAO National Coordinator for Rwanda noted that donations are part of their efforts to support farmers’ development as they usually do. “We have trained members of these cooperatives to capacitate and enable them address malnutrition challenges of the children through sufficient harvests and efficient use of foods at hand,” he said.

Nyirabenga Marie Chantal , a resident of Ruheru sector, says mushroom growing will go a long way in supporting efforts to reduce and eventual elimination of malnutrition in the area where, she emphasizes, “farmers have an unwavering resolve to practice modern farming which will have a direct bearing on harvests per unit area and feeding practices.”
