{Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community policing from Nyarugenge district have been urged to be more vigilant and reinforce their awareness campaigns to ensure that more people are involved in crime prevention.}
Nyarugenge District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Bosco Segatare, while addressing the youth on January 9, encouraged the youth to be more vigilant in crime prevention noting that the current level of security has earned Rwanda reputation to become a hub for international events and tournaments like Interpol General Assemly and CHAN, but added that this peace and security must be preserved and other existing challenges dealt with collectively.
“You can only achieve your goal of ensuring public safety through community policing; you have to always remind the public that ensuring security begins with an individual him or herself,” IP Segatare said.
The meeting held in Rwezamenyo Sector was also attended by the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Crime Prevention Organization(RYVCPO) national coordinator, Jean Bosco Mutangana.
The organization is made up of up to 10,000 university and high school students as well as head teachers from across the country and according to their national coordinator, Mutangana, “stamping out crimes requires vigilance and we cannot achieve that when we deal with effects of crimes, instead we should dwell more on preventive measures, which is our main course.”
Mutangana reminded his colleagues about their mandate and urged them to always consult the authorities whenever they face any challenge.
During the meeting, the Executive Secretary of Nyarugenge Sector, Charles Vuguziga gave a detailed lecture on patriotism and also encouraged the young generation to reach to many youth and involve them in crime prevention.
Rwanda National Police continuously reaches out to the youth and has trained members of the RYVCPO on crime prevention.
The organization support communities by carrying out crime prevention awareness programmes in schools and communities on various themes against crimes like drug abuse, corruption ‘ gender and domestic violence, among others.
Community-oriented policing is a strategy adopted by RNP that focuses on police building ties and working closely with members of the communities to overcome crime in the society.
