Nyamasheke Girinka cow sellers face courts

Some residents of Gihombo sector of Nyamasheke district say they have seen some of their neighbors selling cows donated to them through the Girinka program without replacing nor donating to other vulnerable citizens.

“I have not yet received a cow but some people have sold Girinka cows. It is not fair for a cow from Girinka program to leave the household since it helps in getting milk keeping children free of malnutrition and collection of farmyard manure as well,” said Dusabimana Madalene a resident of Gihombo sector.

The veterinary officer of Gihombo sector, Habineza Odette says that they have identified 15 beneficiaries of Girinka program that have sold cows out and so asked them to regain them.

“It is a serious problem. Beneficiaries who sold cows and didn’t buy others are 15. However, the administration recovers the cow when such cases are realized early and hand the recovered cow to the owner or another vulnerable citizen as per the law. The buyer gets back his money, but when the money is not available it is not our concern. We firstly take back the cow and then both the buyer and seller go to courts,” she said.

193 cows have been distributed in Gihombo sector since the beginning of Girinka program.
