Residents of Nyagatare District have been lauded for their collaboration and cooperation with police in keeping security mainly through regular information sharing.
They were, however, urged to strengthen their partnership and focus more on prevention rather than reporting consequences.
The district vice mayor in charge of social affairs, Domithile Musabyemariya, while addressing the residents in Gatunda Sector on November 3, also urged the residents to safeguard their health through timely subscribing to the public health insurance scheme – Mutuelle de santé.
She noted that security manifests in many ways, including personal health.
Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Claude Kaburabuza; the District Community Liaison Officer of Nyagatare, said: “Security is a public good to be enjoyed by all citizens, and you should always strive to give no room for anyone to interfere with it. It is your gift of peace and development that should be guarded jealously.”
This follows varied separate incidents where residents have reported drug dealers, cattle thieves and even local leaders involved in malpractices like corruption.
He called for strengthened routine community night patrols – Irondo – to prevent issues related to trafficking and sell of drugs especially illicit gin that is still common in the district, and cattle theft.
He asked residents to stand up against all forms of abuse and corruption in particular.
The residents were also reminded to protect the environment by fighting illegal cutting of trees and other acts that can lead to environmental degradation.
