Illicit brew, just like narcotics is becoming a menace to the Rwandan society. It is slowly claiming people’s lives while perpetrators are only focused at making quick money through offering toxic beverages.

Just like drugs, illicit brew fuels the rate of criminal activity. Today those who commit crimes such as domestic violence, robbery, rape among others are most of time under influence of illicit brews as well as excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks.

Brewers and consumers of illicit alcohol have branded these drinks with comical nicknames such as Muriture, yewemuntu, Ibikwangari, Nyirantare among others. All these efforts are aimed at making these drinks too attractive to the general public (consumers).

They are crudely made, with raw materials such as sugar residuals and in some cases they add all sorts of unfathomable products such as brick dust and powder to increase the alcohol content.

Police is encouraging the general public and the youth in particular to indulge in other activities such as, traditional dance, movies, sports as a way of keeping healthier and stronger instead of spending their time consuming drugs.

Police also appeals to Rwandans to stop brewing and consuming illegal alcohol as it doesn’t only put at risk lives of innocent citizens but also impacts negatively the national economic development of the country.

Police will never deter from bringing to book whoever is caught dealing in the manufacture or consumption of illicit brews and drugs.
