Nyagatare: Grassroots leaders urged to lead crime prevention drive

The Vice mayor of Nyagatare District in charge of social affairs, Domitile Musabyemariya has urged local leaders in the district to take the lead in sensitizing the public against crimes and drug abuse in particular.

She made the remarks on May 25 during a meeting with 134 local leaders in the district where she pointed out that Nyagatare still experiences common tendencies of drug abuse, domestic and gender based violence and child abuse, among others.

“We have seen a significant impact of community policing spearheaded by local leaders in identifying and reporting crimes in the past where wrongdoers have been arrested and illegal or stolen items recovered, and we expect you to strengthen the partnership with police and the people to leave no room for criminality,” said Musabyemariya.

During the same meeting, the District Community Liaison officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Claude Kaburabuza, said that crimes like Gender Based Violence and child abuse, drug abuse and human trafficking require serious attention.

“Local leaders provide a platform for crime detection and source of criminal information in areas of their responsibility….beside that, you need to ensure that no children live on the streets or any other place that is unfit for habitation. Child abuse and school drop outs are still big issues, which need to be addressed collectively,” said Kaburabuza.

He urged them to identify families affected with disputes, children who dropped out of school and what could have prompted that, as means to address all the concerns effectively.
