Nyabihu: four arrested for trafficking illegal gin

{Police in Nyabihu district have arrested three people for allegedly trafficking 5760 sachets of illegal gin commonly known as “Blue Sky” in a Toyota Land Cruiser with Democratic Republic of Congo plate number CGO 0328AB.}

According to the Western Region Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Damascene Hodari Ngemanyi, the suspects identified as Gloire Ndakize, Isaac Mubaraka and Ivan Namigabe were arrested in the wee hours of April 26.

In a related development, police also arrested Shabani Munezero with 228 sachets of Blue Sky in Rubaya cell of Mukamira sector. Munezero had wrapped sachets of blue sky around his body under his clothes.

Following the arrests, IP Hodari warned that Rwanda National Police knows all the entry points and tricks used by those who transport, sell or use the illegal gin from the neighboring countries and went on to advise all Rwandans to refrain from such illegal activities to avoid the heavy legal penalties stipulated by the Law.

The regional spokesperson commended the public for sharing timely and accurate information relating to crime.

“The suspects were arrested following a tip off from resident who had information about the illegal practices,” he said.

Under article 594 of the penal code, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.
