The effort is being made in order to reduce the number of refugees accommodated in the transit camp of Nkamira in Western Province which has more than 8,000 refugees from eastern DRC.
Nyabiheke Camp will be expanded to about 23 ha in order to accommodate all Congolese refugees coming to Rwanda.
Frédéric Ntawukuriryayo, in charge of Communications and Public Relations in Rwanda Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees Affairs told IGIHE that Congolese refugees in Rwanda are treated well, adding that they have a decent shelter and food and all this is done in partnership with UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees) and other affiliates.
Warsame Neimar, UN Commissioner for Refugees in Kigali recently stated that to meet the needs of Congolese refugees on Rwandan soil, it will take about Rwf 29 billion.
To date, Rwanda hosts 70,000 Congolese refugees located in different camps.
